Nothing stays hidden forever, neither body nor secrets but up until a month ago, I had taken it to be one of many platitudes which emanated from the lips of my father. And here I was coming to terms with the unearthing of one of my many hidden truths while water drops from the winter rain plunked continuously on the car roofs that littered the narrow street across her two bedroom terraced house.
I banged on the door incessantly for over ten minutes. There was still no answer at the door even though the lights in the upstairs bedroom was on. I knew she was in there and I knew she heard me at the door but she refused to answer. I wish I could I say I understood why she wouldn't want anything to do with me for the rest of her life but I just could not say so. Everything I had done and said was only to bring myself to meet someone as amazing as she was and the last month had been the best of my life to say the least. That was not an overstatement. I continued my assault on the wooden door but to no avail. I tried to stop myself but I just couldn't. I hated to see my future slipping through the grasp of my fingers and the only thing I felt I could do to hold on to the dream was to keep on hitting at the door. Another five minutes went past before the neighbouring door creaked open, her pale old face emerging from the small opening.
'I think it's time for you to leave young man.' her frail voice said gently as she looked on expecting me to do or say something.
All dreams come to an end, so do all journeys and this had been a memorable one. This show was over and it was time to the final bow. With that, I turned and walked away through the pouring rain.
